LED color temperature: choosing 2700K, 3000K, 4000K or 5000K
Understand Kelvin labels and choose a consistent light appearance for bedrooms, living spaces, kitchens, garages and work areas.
What the Kelvin number changes
Color temperature describes whether white light appears warm, neutral or cool. It does not tell you how much light the bulb produces—that is the lumen rating.
A 2700K lamp resembles the warm appearance many people associate with incandescent bulbs. Around 3000K remains warm but a little cleaner. Values near 4000K look more neutral, while 5000K products can feel daylight-like or blue in residential interiors.
Choose for the room and its finishes
Warm light often complements wood, warm paint and relaxed living areas. Neutral light can help kitchens, bathrooms and workspaces feel crisp. Garages and utility spaces may benefit from cooler light when visibility is the priority.
There is no universally correct number. Buy one sample and view it at night, when electric light carries the room. Daytime impressions can be distorted by sunlight from windows.
Consistency matters
Mixing color temperatures in the same sightline can make one fixture appear yellow and another blue. Check every package, especially when replacing only part of a multi-bulb fixture.
Also consider color rendering information on the package. Color temperature describes the shade of white; color rendering describes how faithfully objects and finishes appear under that light.
