Does a smart thermostat need a C-wire? A homeowner's decision guide

What the common wire does
A smart thermostat needs power for its screen, radio and processor. The C, or common, wire provides a continuous return path in many 24-volt HVAC systems.
Some models can operate without a connected C-wire in certain systems, while others require one or use an approved power connector. Compatibility depends on both thermostat and HVAC equipment.
A spare conductor is not automatically connected
A cable may contain an unused wire behind the wall plate, but that does not prove the wire is connected to the C terminal at the equipment. Both ends must be verified with power safely off.
Never rely on insulation color alone. Installers commonly follow conventions, but terminal labels and equipment documentation are the evidence that matters.
Choose the safe solution
Use the manufacturer's compatibility instructions. Approved options may include connecting an existing spare conductor, installing a power connector or adapter, running new thermostat cable or choosing a compatible model.
HVAC control boards can be damaged by shorts or incorrect connections. If the equipment panel, low-voltage wiring or installation steps are unfamiliar, use a qualified HVAC technician.
